for “morels.” Both are a form of fungus, and like, mushrooms, they sprout up within hours and, like some mushrooms, are edible. “Merkels” or “morels,” have a cone shape, and are crisscrossed by a network of ridges.
But whatever the name, they’re harder to spot than a mushroom. Sometimes they barely nose their way out of the deep mulch of decaying leaves and logs lying atop the forest floor. And even if they stand tall, their dull brownish color makes them less obvious than some other spring growth, such as fiddlehead ferns and wildflowers.
