Lloyd, merkels are getting scarce.

“USED TO just find fields of ’em. Just like with creasy,” Jenny said. “But now if you want creasy salad much you have to plant it in the garden. And merkels you have to hunt.” (“Creasy” is wild cress.)

“You won’t see ’em right when we get to the place,” Jenny said. “After we find some, and show you what they are, you can probably find some too, if your eyes are good. But first, we have to go down and get Lloyd to go with us. Lloyd’s about the best of all my kids for huntin’ merkels. But I have an older boy who’s mighty good too.”

So Jenny and Lloyd led the way—across a meadow and a stream, through fields where broom sedge stands hip high, past the stump rows of a one-time orchard, up toward the higher slopes of Brown’s Mountain.
