This “rustic” bridge replaced the handsome old iron truss bridge at Laurel Mills. The Highway Department calls such structures “rustic” because the concrete is tinted, hopefully to blend with existing native stone and soil colors; and rusty brown guardrails and natural log safety rails are used, instead of bright aluminum or painted steel. Last week, the Highway Department approved a $314,662 contract with R. L. Rider & Company of Warrenton to grade, drain and pave 1.2 miles of 20-foot-wide roadway along “an improved alignment” of Route 729 east of Laurel
