STUDENTS and other people who plan to get a summer job should apply now for a social security number if they don’t have one, according to Philip E. Bettendorf, social security district manager in Winchester.
“You should apply for your number several weeks before you need it for a job covered by social security,” Bettendorf said. “Applications must be screened against central files in Baltimore to make sure that a second number isn’t issued to that same person. Screening generally takes several weeks.”
