AFTER Helsel’s explanation of the facts of federal funding, the Planning District Commissioners unanimously supported the creation of the Aging Agency. Now each of the five Boards of Supervisors and the Town Council of Warrenton (the town of Culpeper has declined to join the Planning District) will be asked to establish the Aging Agency. When three jurisdictions do so, the agency will be set up.
Helsel’s arguments for the establishment of the Aging Agency were similar to the points made when local governments were asked to join the Planning Districts. Local governments were told that if they did not join the regional bureaucracy, federal and state funding would be cut off. However, this has not always been true.— Mark Helmke
