In case a listener isn’t duly impressed with his students’ achievement, Moody makes it clear that they weren’t just “hilltopping.” They were taking every fence everybody else jumped. And Rappahannock terrain is not easy hunting, Moody said. “Sometimes you come galloping down Turkey Mountain or some other mountainside and you got to take a fence at the bottom.
“A lot of people come here and try to ride ‘by the book.’ I try to tell ’em but they won’t listen. Soon they find out, you can’t always ride that ‘lean forward’ theory in Rappahannock.”
