aspects of work at Old Mill Stables.

“Yeah, we try to do a little bit of most everything concerning horses, ” Moody said in his soft, slow voice. And on a Saturday at Old Mill Stables, there was a little bit of everything going on. Pete and Smokey Aylor were schooling the horses they planned to show the next day. Three little girls with long blond braids trailing from under their hunt caps were trotting about on ponies. Four adults, whom Moody calls his “star pupils,” were putting on a hastily arranged jumping show, which none of them wanted to do, but since Moody wanted it (for the “press”) they agreed. A pregnant lady, who admitted that riding Western seat is against “doctor’s orders,” was giving instruction in barrel racing. A couple of teenagers were just riding around, with no particular direction, taking whatever jump happened to be in front of them. A very small boy aboard a tiny paint pony was leaping over low jumps. And the fence was lined with an assortment of spectators, some clad in blue jeans and others attired in what might be New York chic.
