From Page 1 board, and school board members will not receive any additional compensation over their current rate; the budget requested by the welfare department has already been slashed; their request for an additional staff member had been turned down, Luke said. The budget of the zoning department had also been cut, Luke added; he and Fanning Baumgardner had seen to that.

The remaining budget requests, over which the Supervisors could exercise much choice were $414 proposed as Rappahannock’s share of a district agency on aging, $250 as the county share of $5,000 worth of new radio equipment for the sheriff’s department, and an additional $400 for emergency technician training for the fire and ressuc squad crews. Even if all these requested are omitted entirely, savings would amount to a little more than $1,000, Luke said.

“So any real cuts are bound to come out of the school budget or personnel, if want to make any impact,” Luke said.

The Supervisors decided to cut the school budget from a requested $1,184,205 to $1,116,059. This reduces school board expenditues from a proposed $730 per child to $700 per student. The Supervisors’ budget reduction would give Rappahannock teachers an overall salary increase of 5 per cent, down from the 9 per cent they requested.
