Dinsmoor White, executive director of the Piedmont Environmental Council, called the action of the SCC “a monumental decision against our efforts toward preserving the visual order and scenic quality of this Piedmont countryside. This creates a situation in which Vepco can run a line anywhere they wish at any time,” White said. He added,‘‘This means that every landowner in the area who values the beauty of his place has a threat over his head at some time in the future.”
Fauquier’s Marshall District Supervisor Jason Paige noted that the proposed powerline will go through ‘‘one of the wildest and prettiest parts of the county, the area around Linden. I am very disappointed. I had hoped that we would be able to stop it.” Paige said he wasn’t ready to make any comments concerning an appeal of the SCC decision. ‘‘We’ll have to discuss this in a board meeting and see what everybody wants to do,” Paige said.
PHIL IRWIN, president of Rappahannock League for Environmental Protection, said he was ‘‘terribly surprised and disappointed” at the SCC decision. ‘‘We felt we put on a great case,” Irwin said. ‘‘We feel the environmental impact is substantially greater in a new corridor and we thought we presented sufficient evidence to substantiate that,” he said. But Irwin was encouraged by SCC member Bradshaw’s dissent.
