“Well, what can we do?” Luke asked his fellow board members. “It appears we can’t do any more to the school budget than we’ve already done. Could we take 10 per cent off everybody’s operating expenses?” He asked clerk Ned Jones if the proposed $1,200 to repair the books was necessary. “If you don’t want the books to fall apart,” Jones said.
Luke said he “could live with” cutting the library budget. He still felt the recommendation he’d made to Mary Jamieson, about tapping non-resident county landowners for donations, would bring in some extra money there. The Supervisors left the appropriation for the library at $5,666, the same as last year.
“There have to be some additional ways to bring in money, other than the property tax,” Luke said. He wondered aloud if a real estate tax could be placed on property that changes hands. “$7.6 million of real estate was sold in this county last year,” he noted. “I wonder if we could put a
