Bedford - Stuyvesant, Watson’s old precinct, is regarded as one of the roughest assignments within the New York City police force— ‘‘more militant than Harlem,” he said. ‘‘A lot of the young policemen get assigned there,” he said, ‘‘maybe because they’ll get broken in sooner. But it’s similar in Virginia; a lot of the new troopers are sent to the metropolitan area of northern Virginia first. In New York, the older officers, once they have some seniority, try to get reassigned to better areas.”
Despite the number of people in his old precinct, Watson said he got to know quite a few of them. ‘‘I spent most of my time on a scooter, on patrol. After a few months, you get to know a tremendous amount of the people from
