“When something like that happens, the police department drops its daily schedule so that extra men can be brought into the riot area. Twenty-five policemen in the midst of 1,000 demonstrators can do a world of good. But the policemen need good leadership. You can’t let verbal abuse or getting spattered with pig blood bother you.”
“What you do, of course, depends on what takes place in front of you. But generally, you let minor violations go. Things you would normally arrest people for, you just ignore. One way we made some arrests was with the help of rolling cameras. People thought a lot of their actions went unnoticed, but plainclothes policemen had made the movies,” Watson said.
Virginia State Troopers are taught to handle “just about everything,” Jonathan Watson said. The training program covers a wider spectrum of topics than the New York city police training program. “But training for New York police work placed more emphasis on classroom study and criminal law. In the Virginia State Police training program, emphasis was shifted to accident investigation and highway related subjects.
