It wouldn’t be worth the effort, in many people’s minds—to go to the expense of hiring the personnel that would be required to give such service, for the amount of aid money that would be received in turn.

IN OTHER words, some arbitrary bureaucratic rule would cost the taxpayers of Rappahannock more than it would return in federal largesse.

Rappahannock has attracted state and national attention for its independent state of mind concerning such arrangements as these, but the state and federal bureaucracies keep persisting. Maybe, if Rappahannock continues to point out the absurdity of such regulations, somebody, somewhere, will finally pay attention, and inject some common sense into government, even at its so-called “highest” levels. □
