again last April when 66.59% voted for the Commission, just a shade less than the two-thirds vote needed for approval.
It was because of the close vote in 1975 that the Beef Cattle Association and beef cattle growers asked that another referendum be held.
A BEEF Cattle Commission would have been a self-help program in which cattlemen would tax themselves 15 cents per head on all cattle sold. The money would have been used to maintain and expand the state, national and foreign markets for cattle and beef and increase the use and consumption of beef, veal and their products.
This referendum was the largest of the three totals. In 1970 4,456 voted; in 1975, 5,543 voted; and this year, 5,581.D
Softball tourney
The Skyline Valley Officials Association of Front Royal has announced that the Front Royal Men’s Open Softball Tournament will be May 14, 15 and 16. Entry blanks are available by contacting Russell Henry, assistant tournament director, at 515 Bel Air Avenue in Front Royal or calling (703) 6353584 or (703) 635-5243.
Ralph E. Lewis, tournament director, said he is hopeful that the kick-off tournament to the area’s softball season will consist of teams from North Carolina and West Virginia as well as teams from Virginia.
Deadline for entry blanks is Wednesday, May 12. Only the first 32 teams will be admitted.
