ON MARCH 9, 1976, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration issued new safety and health requirements for agriculture. This new standard requires guards and other protective device!; be placed on agricultural machinery.
Effective June 7, 1976, all agricultural equipment, regardless of age must have a completely guarded power take-off drive line. This includes the use of a master shield on the tractor PTO except where die equipment is of a design requiring the removal of the shield for operation. These guards have been manufactured for over 30 years, and if used will prevent die frequent tragic accidents resulting from entanglement with rotating PTO shafts.
Effective June 7, 1976 employers must instruct every employe when they first come on the job and, at least annually thereafter, in the safe operation and servicing of all machinery they will operate. It is not OSHA’s intent to require documentation that this instruction was given, only that it be given. ■r
Effective September 7, 1976 all motors shall be of the manual reset type except where it can be established that a manual reset is infeasible; there is an electric ‘ disconnect switch within 15 feet; and a sign is prominently displayed in the immediate area, warning of the hazard. □
