MEMBERS of Virginia’s beef cattle industry voted against the creation of a Beef Cattle Commission in the State, at the same time sweet potato producers approved a Commission for their industry.
S. Mason Carbaugh, Commissioner of Agriculture and Commerce, received the results from both votes yesterday. A total of 26 sweet potato producers voted in their referendum with 25 saying yes to a commission and only one voting no. In the beef cattle referendum the judges indicated that of 7,303 eligible voters, 5,851 had cast their ballots, and of these, 3,395 voted for the Commission and 2,417 voted against. The final tally showed only 58.1% in favor. A two-thirds (66.66%) majority was necessary for approval. A total of 23 ballots were declared ineligible by the judges.
This is the third time the beef cattle growers have voted on this issue. It was defeated in 1970, when only 47 percent voted for the Commission and it was defeated
