fourth grades ranked in the 63 percentile on the social studies portion of the SR A tests. By eleventh grade, their ranking had dropped to the 45 percentile. Loudoun fourth grade students ranked in the 59 percentile in language arts, and in eleventh grade dropped to the 38 percentile.
Fauquier County students reversed this statewide trend in some areas. Fauquier fourth graders scored in the 38 percentile in total mathematics and rose to the 50 percentile in eleventh grade. Fauquier students also raised their fourth grade to eleventh grade rankings in reading from 51 to 52.
“THERE were no significant declines in any of the tests,” said Dr. Franklin A. Cain, director
of program evaluation for the state agency, speaking on the basis of Virginia averages as a whole. Only one change occured in ability percentiles; for the eighth grade students tested the percentile dropped from 41 to 39, which, he said, “was not significant.”
Changes in average score percentiles are considered significant, Department Testing Service personnel; said, .if they exceed five points, except for the eleventh grade where the differential is eight points .—Daphne McCullough.
