THE Rappahannock Space Study Committee members, at a Monday night meeting, reaffirmed their opposition to “immediate” construction of a new county office building as a solution to Court House space problems.
“I haven’t changed my mind a bit about the jail,” said A. H. Keyser, in reference to his proposal at the Committee’s previous meeting that the Sheriffs Department and School Board offices be moved to the jail. “The county’s not getting 15 cents worth of good out of it (the jail),” added Carson Johnson.
“It would cost $3,400 a year to transport prisoners to Warrenton, using the Sheriff’s own figures.. We’re now spending $5,000 a year on a jailor’s salary and using space that we could use to eliminate rent for the School Board, storage (of School Board records) in Warren County and possibly rent for two other offices that have to be moved out of the Court House.”
