RAPPAHANNOCK residents have organized a local FISH Chapter to help others in time of emergency or need. The organization derives its name form the ancient Greek symbol of Christians, the fish. Baptist, Methodist, Episcopal and other churches are sponsoring the chapter and people with no church affiliation are also participating.
Organized in England, in 1961, the concept has spread over Europe, Canada, and the United States. There are more than 3,000 chapters in America alone. Each chapter has a widely advertised central telephone number which anyone in need may call. This number automatically refers the caller to a FISH volunteer who is prepared to assist. Assistance ranges from emergency transportation to finding necessities for a family burned out of their home.
THE FISH organization does not replace existing services such as the rescue squad or welfare department, but augments them. The Rappahannock FISH telephone is 9878200 and will begin service on July 1.
