the coming of Christ. Christ proclaimed freedom of the human spirit. Two thousand years later America’s Founding Fathers implemented it with the material expertise and courage of George Washington.
This brings us to the relationship of our beloved Rappahannock County area to these considerations. For us all the simple monument near the courthouse in Washington, Virginia, the county seat, and the first town in America to be named after the Father of Our Country—Surveyed and laid out by young George—is a symbol of great spiritual meaning! It can and should have influencial significance for all young folk. For them there can be a sequence of thought and feeling leading in a straight line— inspiringly—from the humble obelisk in Washington, Virginia on to the very top of the awesome, skypiercing beauty of the monument to the man, the great white shaft in our Nation’s Capital.
What a trek of faith, love and courage!
We wish every lad and lass could stand before the Virginia Monument, at dawn and be properly briefed about it, and then travel, or be “bussed” to the base of the grand spire in Washington, D.C. with proper historical and spiritual narrations, en route. Would that some historical society could see this as a worthy Bicentennial project!!
