In reference to the 1976 Bicentennial pageant. For your good paper this is a note of regret and apology to our neighbors, friends and all good Rappahannock-Icans, including the ghosts of our Founding Fathers. We know that they are all looking forward eagerly to the performance of the Bicentennial Pageant at Montpelier, “Let Freedom Ring,” on Saturday, June 12 at 8:45 p.m.
We feel, from all present indications, that thousands, from near and far, will, attend and, participate in what will probably be Rappahannock’s most memorable event in a long time. But we are heartsick because we have had to inform the producers of the pageant, our good friends, Mr. and Mrs. Waldron O’Conner, that because of personal contingencies we, Mrs. Pawley and I, must forgo participation.
They had offered us the transcedant honor of speaking the Declaration of Independence for this production. We know it will celebrate vitally and vividly the birth .of our Republic, which is so necessary for us all to remember in our uncertain present. We are of low spirit, indeed, at the thought of not being a part of it, particularly, as our Republic’s Great Natal Day. We cherish for mankind as second only to the advent of Jesus!
