The jail building has two floors and a basement. The basement is now being used as part of the living quarters for the jailer and his family. The first floor includes a large hall way and two rooms, measuring approximately 12 by 14 square feet. The second floor also has two 12 by 14 rooms, a hallway and a bathroom. The building has eight cells, four on each floor.
At the May 10 meeting, Keyser, Johnson and Walter Masterson proposed that the Sheriff’s office be moved to the basement with the School Board housed on the first floor. Keyser felt that the presence of the Sheriff’s department would eliminate the need for a jailer at an approximate savings to the County of $5,000. (Rappahannock jail is only a lock-up facility. Prisoners can be held for 24 hours before they must be transferred to WarrentOn.)
