PLANS are under way for construction of a $6 million 4-H Educational Center near Front Royal to serve the 1,286,000 persons, including 35,000 4-H club members, who live in 18 northern Virginia counties and the city of Alexandria.
The center will be owned by a self-sustaining, non-profit corporation—the Northern Virginia 4H Educational Center, Inc,—which has been chartered as a nonprofit organization by the State Corporation Commission. The center will be managed by its board of directors and the Cooperative Extension Division, of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.
A campaign to raise capital funds to build the facilities will be launched this spring. The center will be built on 229 acres, formerly a part of the site of the Beef Cattle Research Station, five miles south of Front Royal, in Harmony Hollow, adjacent to Shenandoah National Park.
Congressman J. Kenneth Robinson of the Seventh District was instrumental in obtaining the acreage from the General Services Administration.
BUILDING plans call for six winterized cabin clusters to accommodate 80 persons each, one winterized cabin cluster for infirmary and staff housing, a main lodge with dining hall, conference facilities and sleeping quarters.
In addition, there will be a manager’s residence, an animal center, including a horse stable and riding ring, as well as a swimming pool, playing fields, tennis courts, trails, and rifle and archery ranges.
