The annual Bland Music Scholarship recital will be held at Rappahannock Elementary School on Sunday, February 20, beginning at 3:30 p.m. The public is invited.
Established by the Lions Club of Virginia, the music scholarships are a living memorial of one of the most famous black composers in America, James Bland. He is the composer of “Carry Me Back To Ole Virginny,” and other songs.
Any boy or girl who is a resident of Virginia, a, vocalist or instrumentalist, attending elementary, junior high dr high school, may be a contestant. State winners, both vocal and instrumentalist, each win a $1,000 scholarship to further their music education. Second place winners receive $500 scholarships, third place winners receive $250 scholarships, and fourth, fifth and sixth place wins $100 cash awards.
The two winners of the Rappahannock contest will each receive a $50 savings bond and will be eligible to compete in the Lions Club zone contest. Second place winners
