During the recent extreme winter weather, the RappahannockRapidan Area Agency on Aging received numerous calls from sen►yor citizens who were unable to pay the high costs of heating their homes.
The Area Agency on Aging responded by setting up a special emergency fuel program to assist persons over 60 who were in critical need of fuel supplies. Grants of up to $50 were made on a onetime basis to 28 persons in Orange, Culpeper, Madison and Rappahannock counties.
After receiving a request for help, the Area Agency on Aging placed an order for the appropriate kind of fuel and sent the payment directly to the gas, electric oil or wood supplier. Staff members from the Nutrition Services program in each county were helpful in identifying emergency situations and in arranging fuel deliveries.
