Foreman warned.that since engineers have had only ten years’ experience with landfills, there is a lot they still do not know, and they’d rather have one site than many to deal with. “Exactly what that garbage will do ten years from now, we don’t know. We’re getting compounds that we don’t even know what they are, combinations of garbage, plastics, paints, all combinations.”
But he assured Manwaring that great pains would be taken to protect water supplies.
“What’s wrong with a small site if ten years from now you find you’ve been doing it all wrong?” asked Gardner.
“If we have 100 holding ponds, you have a problem. It would be better to have only one or two,” said Foreman.
