"Hallelujah! We’ve got it made!” declared Rappahannock Water and Sewer Authority Chairman Maurice Biddle after a show of hands indicated no opposition to the facility plan for a Sperryville sewer system. Citizens packed the fireball for last Friday night’s public meeting to hear engineering consultant George Long present four project alternatives, and while all hands did not go up in support of the final choice, a secondary treatment plant discharging into the Thornton River, none were raised in opposition.
‘‘This is the largest group in Sperryville that I’ve seen,” commented Biddle, before giving a brief history of the town’s problems with raw sewage and contaminated wells.
In 1968, the Water and Sewer Authority was formed for the purpose of dealing with Sperryville’s problem, noted Biddle. Since then, the Authority has proceeded towards a solution ‘‘with all due deliberate speed” with the main objective “not to cost you any money,” he told the audience.
