IT IS not too early to be planning for the 1977 spring planting season. The Virginia Division of Forestry offers seedlings to Fauquier landowners at the cost of production. More than 20 forest and wildlife seedling varieties are available. White pine and loblolly pine seedlings are the biggest sellers. A Fauquier landowner can purchase 1,000 loblolly pine seedlings for $9.50. Planting advice is available upon request.
“Why should I plant tree seedlings” is a question many landowners ask. In addition to the low cost per thousand, benefits include beautification of bare land, reduction of erosion and sedimentation problems, increased wildlife habitat, effective “green belts” that provide air pollution control and a buffer for noise abatement, and a potential forest crop that provides watershed protection, said a state forester. Gutover areas, abandoned fields, and any idle acreage are excellent candidates for planting sites.
Fauquier landowners who reforest three or more acres can enroll in a 50 per cent costshare program and receive financial and technical assistance.
