“All hounds kept in the Rappahannock Hunt territory or owned by a member of the Northern Virginia Fox Hunters Association are eligible,” Lyne said. He urged all owners who haven’t entered their hounds to do so as soon as possible, in order to receive their pass and tickets by race time March 5.
In 1975, Jack Bruce of Sperryville retired the Rappahannock Challenge Trophy in the foxhound race. All entrants this year will be after the Wells trophy. Last year’s winner was owned by Kelly Corbin of Culpeper. The Rappahannock races are the only Northern Virginia point-to-points in which a contest of this kind is held. It is the final event of the day and a guaranteed crowd pleaser.
MARCH 5 will be a full day of racing at Rappahannock, beginning with the 2-1/4 mile Pairs Race for hunters, against the clock, over natural hazards. Top steeplechasers will also be featured — in hurdle races and rugged timber races — over rolling terrain in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Despite this year’s cold weather the Rappahannock course is in excellent condition.
Tickets to all the races will be available at the gate. A variety of food and beverages will be sold on the grounds. Plenty of parking will be provided. □
