In response to the new regulations, VPI conducted a series of training seminars for pesticide users. To date, said Rust, 17,000 private and 4,500 commercial applicators have completed training and qualified for a Virginia permit. “So we have come a long way,” commented Rust, although he noted that the number of certified private applicators completing the VPI training was 25 per cent below original estimates.
Gassification of chemicals into general or restricted use has been the single biggest stumbling block to implementing the program, he continued. To date, 23 pesticide chemicals have been classified by EPA as restricted. In addition, said Rust, 38 chemicals are now under review.
