In fashioning a two ounce measuring cup, Faust started with a four inch disc of pewter. He spins the disc on a modified lathe from Sears Department Store that he has “beefed up” to 1300 revolutions per minute. He sets a “chuck” into the lathe to shape the pewter disc, and then tightens the disc between the chuck and the whetffT
With his two most important instruments, the back stick and forming tool, Faust begins very carefully to pull the pewter, much like a potter who uses his hands to pull up a piece of clay.
“Accuracy and close tolerance are the secrets” of the craft, Faust explains.
As the pewter whirls around, Faust lubricates the metal frequently on both sides with beeswax and linseed oil to keep down the level of heat generated. He notes that pewter is a very soft alloy which melts at 450 degrees fahrenheit. As he
