Virginia Congressman J. Kenneth Robinson, named last week as a member of the newly-formed, nine-member 'Republican Task Force on the Agriculture Emergency, said today the Congressional panel plans to concentrate at the outset on “ways to boost U.S. farm exports, provide credit relief to hard-pressed farm producers and bolster grain prices.”
Robinson, who also serves on the House Agriculture Appropriations panel, said he hopes the tast force “will prove instrumental in developing practical ways to prevent ‘hard times’ from becoming any more disastrous. All the evidence indicates many farmers are in serious financial trouble. Farm debt has jumped 63 per cent in the last five years. In terms of current dollars, farm income sank from $33 billion in 1973 to only about $20 billion last year—a drastic drop at a time of high, continuing inflation.”
The formation of the task force was announced on Feb. 21st by House Minority Leader John Rhodes of Arizona, and House Republican Research Committee Chairman Bill Frenzel of Minnesota.
Rhodes said the task force should try to come up with proposals to aid the badlydepressed farm economy as rapidly as possible.
