In 1V/1, he retired and began his life as a craftsman. He was proficient in silversmithing, lapidary work and raising African violets but Faust found no fulfillment in these endeavors. So he started serious work as a pewter spinner. “My reason for working with pewter is that it is a challenge,” he said.
Pewter was first used extensively during the 1600 and 1700’s throughout England and Europe for household utensils and church vessels. Because of its relatively low cost, craftsmen introduced pewter as a substitute for silver and gold. The composition of the gray alloy is mostly tin with some antimony and a little copper.
Many early pewter articles were copies of work done by gold and silversmiths.
Pewter requires a great deal of care to keep it in good condition. It tarnishes readily and so needs frequent polishing. It also scratches easily and can be ruined by careless cleaning. But with reasonable attention, it can be kept in as good condition as silver.
