Naked waifs no longer have to shinney up chimneys carrying brushes to push out clogged soot as they did in Europe a little over a century ago. Neither does the boss pour boiling water on the little sweeps nor fan blazes in the fireplace to encourage them to wiggle through tight spots. Even Yankee ingenuity has fallen by the wayside. Dirty chimneys in New England are no longer cleaned in the traditional manner—by tying a rope to a goose and hauling the bird thrrough.
