children or geese, Isaac Watts uses an impressive array of long handled brushes and other tools, including a vacuum cleaner equipped with special filters that draws 700 cubic feet of air per minute. “I can sit with my brushes and clean out a fireplace chimney—the dirtiest job in the house—right in the living room without making a mess because it creates a vacuum and picks up all the soot and ash,” he explained.
Isaac encourages people to clean their own chimneys if they can. “Some old folks shouldn’t try, some people can’t climb and some just wouldn’t ever get their hands dirty,” he added, acknowledging that there will always be a demand for the service that he provides, despite the do-it-your-selfers.
Noting that there’s a right way and a wrong way to clean a chimney, he recalled that one of his Culpeper customers roped a Christmas tree to a tractor and then pulled the tree through the chimney. "When it popped out into the den, his wife was right there, almost ready to present him with divorce papers,” Isaac Finished with a laugh.
