chimney. Then, "like a blow torch,” the pressure causes the creosote gas to shoot out cracks and holes in the chimney, igniting wood paneling and any other flammable materials, said Watts. He added that the temperature of a chimney fire generally ranges between 2000 and 3000 degrees.
As a precaution against chimney fires, he advised home owners to check for creosote buildup in their chimneys. Watts said this could be done with simply a flash light and a mirror—the same tools that professional chimney sweeps use. “The ideal time to have your chimney cleaned is in the spring when the creosote's soft," Watts said. However, he acknowledged that most folks were so glad to be through with anything to do with fire wood and fires by the time burning season was over that they usually put off any maintenance work until cold weather rolled around again.
