Virginia Republicans are fielding an unprecedented number of candidates in this year’s General Assembly races and believe, with considerable justification, that they will increase their presently meager holdings in the legislature.
Going into the ’79 campaigns they occupy 21 seats in the 100-member House of Delegates and six in the 40member Senate. All seats in the General Assembly will be up for ' election in the November balloting.
While GOP strategists regard all of the assembly slots as important, and contend, at least for the record, that none of them has been singled out as more vital than others, a political donneybrook is shaping up in Roanoke which is laden with statewide implications, and merits statewide interest.
In the 21st Senatorial district contest, two veteran legislators are squaring off.
Incumbent Democratic Sen. William B. Hopkins is being challenged by Republican Dl. Ray L.
