Hopkins, 57, is the second ranking member of the Senate. He was first elected to that body in I960 and his seat has not been challenged since 1964. He is chairman of the powerful Senate Steering Committee, a group composed of the ranking members from each of the 10 congressional districts, which makes assignments to the Senate Standing Committees.
While he chairs none of the standing committees, he is the second ranking member of the Finance Committee and the Committee on Local government. If re-elected, he is in line to move up to the number two spot on the privileges and Elections Committee. He is also a member of the Rules Committee. These assignments place him at the center of the Senate's policy making and legislative power structure.
