the days I missed because they suspended me!” Rick recalled, still indignant more than a year later. “That was like sacrificing everything. I told them to forget it. I never did go back. It was crazy!”
Leasons For Work
But in Rappahannock County, or anywhere for that matter, professional opportunities for a high school drop-out are limited. Rick took the only avenue open, picking up odd jobs here and there as a handy man.
He remembers exactly the conversation that steered him off that dead end road. Tommy Fleming, a weekend county resident from Annapolis, Md., asked Rick if he was interested in hunting and fishing.
“Yes, 1 really like it,” Rick recalls answering. “Then he told me I ought to be a taxidermist. So I decided to give it a try.”
Fleming was Talley’s teacher. “I exchanged hours working on his fence line for hours of taxidermy lessons. It was a piece of cake,” Rick said, smiling widely. “I picked it up in my spare time.”
Judging from the lifelike mounts in his living room, Talley has mastered the art with^ittle practice.
Complimented on his work, he protests over and over again, insisting that it’s simple to stuff an animal. Maybe it is for Rick Talley—he certainly makes taxidermy sound easy.
