(Continued from Page 4) discipline since he’s unfamiliar with the situation here. In general terms, however, he emphasized the necessity of giving students the right to be responsible. "I'm not saying that naything goes, but students, teachers AND administrators need room to be responsible” rather than limiting responsibility with "an exhaustive list of do's and don'ts.” Estabrook said. “I’m firmly convinced that the vast majority of students will respond to reason, fairness and firmness."
As regards in-school suspension as a discipline tool. Estabrook said its usefulness would depend on "the philosophy of parents toward education and discipline.”
He reported that two of Wythe County’s three high schools have no in-house suspension program. Students attending the high school in the western end of the county are primarily from farm families of GermanLutheran descent, he said. The youngsters get "firm direction at home", and as a result, the high school has very few discipline cases. "There’s no in-house suspension...There's no particular need for any sort of suspension." Estabrook said.
Students at the high school in the eastern section come predominantly from families involved with the county's lead mining industry. “They’re no less proud of their children and they don't love them any less but they seem to have a different attitude towards discipline. There's less parental guidance." Estabrook said. The principal, however, is a .W-year veteran who is “very, very strict" and is backed up by an experienced assistant principal who shares his philosophy. "There’s not much of a suspension problem there either. It’s a very tightly run high school." Estabrook reported. He noted that the eastern high school has a 97 per cent attendance rate. “If a youngster isn’t in school, the assistant principal is out on the road to find out why. They take the position that if you’re not in school, you ean't learn...It’s a ‘a» monkey business' attitude." Estabrook said.
The largest of the county's three high schools located in the town of Wytheville has a diverse student body with a high percentage the children of professionals, according to Estabrook. This school has an in-house suspension program.
