They acknowledged that until recently, the venilating fan would operate only if the heat was on but noted that it has now been adjusted to run independently of the heating system. This action was taken, they stressed, in response to their complaints.
Von Fange also noted that he has insulated the protruding electrical outlets in the desk area so that students no longer receive mild shocks. “The outlets are dormant now but to remove them, we need an electrician." he said.
As to other safety hazards. Von Fange reported that OSHA inspectors talked about the need for magnetic switches on all machinery. In case of an emergency, newly installed “panic buttons” can be Used to turn off shop equipment- But when power is restored machines that were on when the panic button was hit continue operating. Magnetic switches automatically keep the power off until individual machines are turned back on after power is restored. Only four of the shop's 13 machines have magnetic switches, according to Von Fange.
Dennis added that the safety switches will cost approximately S200 per machine.
Von Fange said he would like to have an electric brake installed on the radial arm saw. He demonstrated that once the off switch or the panic button is thrown, it takes two minutes and SO seconds for the blade to stop rotating. For at least a minute and a half, the speed is sufficient for cutting through a finger or hand.
