ran s experience ana talent has turned a stageful of enthusiastic amateurs into polished professionals. For the past eight weeks at nightly rehearsals, she's coaxed, encouraged and coached her pirates. Indians and lost boys to perfection. As Peter Pan. that ardent supporter of the “let’s-staykids-forever” philosophy, she'll lead her troupe on their maiden flight to Never-Never Land on Thursday evening.
For many in the cast, it will be their first effort at creating theater magic, their first try at suspending disbelief when the curtains are raised. For Pali, it will be another milestone in a career in performing arts that began when she was ten.
“My family called me Sarah Heartburn from the day I could walk." Pali joked in an interview this week. “1 was always acting and singing and dancing—showing off basically." she chuckled.
Imaginative Fantasy
Her first big break came in fifth grade when she was chosen to write and direct the school musical. The original "My Fair Lady's Digestive System." a teaching fantasy featuring a chorus of teeth, a quartet of salivary glands and a duet between the liver and gall , bladder, was Pali's artistic premier. She's still. proud of that early effort. “It was wonderfull I believe kids are the most creative because they haven't been stiffled yet. They're so much better than adults at imagination and make-believe."
But Pali didn't leave her imagination behind with childhood. At Illinois* New Trier High School, known throughout theater circles for its fine arts department, she explored the full range of her dramatic talents. “The school put oti two regular plays, two musicals and one full-length original student production every year. 1 was always involved in all of them." she recalled.
From New Trier. Pali went on to her first professional challenge at the University of Michigan where she won the competition to write and direct the University's sesquicentennial show. “I was paid for it. That was the beginning of my professional career."
