Rappahannock County is one of 30 school divisions from a total of 140 reporting 100 per cent success on competency testing, a requirement for graduation beginning with the class of 1981. At the end of the first semester of 1981, all of Rappahannock’s 74 diplomabound regular students with the required 18 credit units passed both reading and mathematics competency tests.
Statewide, only 1,026 regular seniors (1.5 per cent) who appeared to be successfully completing the 18 required units of credit have not passed the reading and mathematics competency test. Results of tests taken in March, 1981, are not reflected in that figure. Determination of success on reading and mathematics competency tests includes results from tests administered through October, 1980.
Handicapped students were not included since they’re no longer required to pass the tests to qualify for an Individualized Education Program (IEP) diploma.
