Hoosc of Fabrics To Offer Unique Cushions
When the space shuttle Columbia completed its first successful mission, workers at the Avtex plant in Front Royal cheered with the rest of the country. But besides their normal interest in the manned flight. Avtex employees had contributed materials used by the shuttle. They make a rayon yarn which in turn is made into heat shields that are used in the shuttle’s booster rockets. This tough material is a carbonizable continuous nonfilament yam. the same as was used on Apollo 10.
Mr. Weimer of the House of Fabrics in Front Royal said that his store had purchased the special rayon yam from Avtex and plans to use the heavy duty material in cushions. "We think that these cushions will have a special appeal to local space buffs as well as Avtex employees.” Mr. Weimer said. He plans to first market the cushions locally and then try for a broader market as people collect souvenirs to commemorate the first space
