Rappahannock after March 31 made the supervisors leery of committing additional funds when they may be required to expend money to reopen a jail here.
“This is not the year to ask for a whole lot,” maintained Estes. “We have no idea what the impact of all these agricultural districts (with use value taxation) will be and we may have to add on to the jail. The judges can order that it be improved and then we’d be in serious trouble (financially),” he said.
In buying new vehicles for the sheriffs department, “the only thing the county is doing is putting up the money now and getting reimbursement later.” Buntin said. “We expect to have the cars paid for in three years if things go on as they are now.”
The sheriff presented figures that show $11,789 reimbursement by the state for total cost of operating three county cars in fiscal year 1980-81 plus an additional $5,791 over costs. Under current mileage payments, he expects to receive $18,814 in FY 198182, $6,960 more than
