Only a handful of village residents spoke at Monday’s hearing on Sperryville’s proposed sewer project, all in support of a waste water treatment facility but with the proviso that monthly user fees be affordable and that A the, system eliminate ground 'voter contamination
Representatives from the Health Department and State Water Control Board and an engineer from the firm that developed the proposal for the STEP tseptic tank effluent pump) and package treatment plant system began Monday’s hearing with brief background presentations on the history of the Sperryville project. When the meeting was subsequently opened for public comment or question, just five of the 20 or so persons attending responded.
Stu Wilson from the Alexandria office of the State Water Control Board (SWCB) noted that some type of waste water treatment plant for Sperryville has been on the SWCB’s state priority list since 1974, ranked fifth out of 181 proposed projects. The high ranking is attributable to a known health hazard arising from at least 40 points where raw sewage is discharged directly into the Thornton River and from contamination of ground water, according to Wilson.
