If the board should decide that it had okayed the 8.5 percent plus experience step for teachers, he continued. “I will oppose this entire budget,” both by vote at the school board meeting and at the court house before the supervisors.
Randall Updike interjected that he thought an increase in salary for each year’s experience was built into the teachers’ pay scale. In awarding an 8.5 percent cost of living raise to all employees, ‘‘do you automatically drop it (the experience increment)?” he asked.
Eastham repeated that no one on the board would approve the experience step plus 8.5 percent to give teachers an 11.3 jump in pay.
As voices raised around the table. Nelson Lane quickly put in a motion for approval of the instructional category. Apparently abstaining, Reeve and Updike did not voice a vote and the motion carried unanimously.
Teachers’ salaries this year total $871,205. The proposed budget carries $945,257 for teachers’ pay, an increase of 8.5 percent.
The total figure for the proposed budget, $2,401,017 excluding federally funded Title I programs, reflects a 12 percent increase over what the board requested last year. The supervisors, however, cut $89,100 from the proposal, leaving school appropriations at $2,049,701 for the current year. The board's request for 1982-83 represents an approximate 16 percent increase over that amount.
Supervisors Request A significant portion of the increase has been reportedly asked for by supervisors. At the budget work session last Friday, Eastham told the school board that the supervisors wanted an appropriation for a new combination bus garage and central office included in 1982-83 appropriations. (Hie board had initially proposed to construct the facility with unexpended funds from the current budget supplemented with money awarded in the condemnation suit with the highway department for the current bus shop site.)
