Buntin noted, however, that the contract from the State Division of Purchasing at $7,031 per car expires April 1. “That’s the cheapest price I’ve heard of in a long time,” he said.
"They’re almost begging you to take them now,” responded Baldwin, adding that prices may come down even further as the result of the slump in new car sales.
“I’d like to see one car replaced,’.’ Latham noted.
Baldwin agreed that the department needed one new car to use for long trips. “But with the economy being what it is today and everybody else driving older cars...we owe it to the taxpayers to tighten our belts.”
Farmers, merchants and other county business people are making less money and would be hurt even further by an increase in taxes, he said. “I’m hoping things will get better next year,” Baldwin said, adding that the county may be in better shape financially to buy three cars next year than one this year.
Although Buntin suggested that the supervisors approve purchase of at least two new cars, the vote was unanimous to include funds for only one in the proposed 1982-83 budget.
Better Luck
The sheriff had better luck in having his requests met at the State Compensation Board's meeting last Thursday in Warrenton.
Buntin reported that the board, which pays salaries for law enforcement personnel and specifies the number per locality which it will fund, indicated approval for at least one of the two new deputy positions he requested.
The compensation board, however, will probably cut ofT funding for the department’s two part-time deputies if two new full-time positions are awarded, according to the sheriff. "I told them I’d be satisfied with one more deputy if I could keep our two part-time deputies.” The board also okayed a full-time secretary for the sheriffs office to replace the current part-time position and approved three dispatchers to man a county communications system, Buntin said. “But if the jail reopens, they will be joint
