This means that once again the teachers of this county will fall behind in their buying power. It also means that many good teachers who would like to build a life in Rappahannock County will move on because of the apparant lack of care so often displayed by some members of our School Board. It is my personal desire to stay in my present teaching position for at least one more year if for no other reason than to help my fellow educators improve this school system for the children.

To the editor:
I read the “Letter to the Editor” written by Diana Bird several weeks ago. and was amazed at the inference she has drawn from President Reagan’s economic programs. In a recent editorial, the Richmond News Leader provided some facts that should set the record straight.
DEFENSE SPENDING. Under Kennedy, defense spending consumed 47.8 percent of the 1962 Federal budget and accounted for 9 percent of the Gross National Product. Under Reagan, defense consumes 26.2 percent of the federal budget and accounts for 5.7 percent of GNP.
SOCIAL SPENDING. Under Kennedy, social spending equalled 25.1 percent of the federal budget and 5.1 percent of GNP. Under Reagan, social spending equals 53.2 percent of the federal budget and 11.6 percent of GNP.
TAX CUTS. Kennedy’s 1962 tax cut reduced taxes 29 percent for the five highest federal income tax brackets. The Reagan tax cut reduces taxes 23 pier cent for the five highest brackets.
I assume the above facts were checked very closely before being printed on the editorial page of the highly respected Richmond News Leader, which makes me wonder why so many would have us believe that John Kennedy was the epitome of compassion and Ronald Reagan wants to throw hungry widows and orphans onto the streets.
An entirely different picture emerges when facts are compared to demagoguery.
