Thirty students of Wakefield School in Huntly, accompanied by four adult chaperones, departed on Monday, March 29, for a sixteen day trip to Greece and Crete.
Flying British Airways, the group stopped-over in London for a full day of sightseeing before proceeding on to Athens.
Aftr spending three days in Athens, the group will take the boat cruise to Crete, with stops at the islands of Delos, Paros, and Naxos.
The main focus of the four day visit to Crete is Minoan Civilization, which was thriving as early as 2000 B.C. At the Heraklion Museum and at the site of Knossos, the students will view the assembled treasures of the Minoan culture. The tour of Knossos will be followed by excursions to the palace of Phaestos, the Graeco-Roman city of Gortys, the famous beach of Matala, and the plateau of Lassithy, with its thousands of white windmills.
Upon returning to the Greek mainland, the group will begin what is called the Classical Tour, which includes visits to the ruins of Ancient Corinth, Mycenae, Epidaurus, Nauplia, Sparta, Olympia, and Delphi.
